Carlo Dean has written works for various instrumentations, from small chamber groups to orchestra; from solo voice to choir. His works have been performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. Notable chamber works include rails for chamber orchestra (premiered by the New Century Players, conducted by David Rosenboom), and Cork for violin/percussion and percussion/violin (written for Devin Maxwell, and premiered by Devin Maxwell and Daphne Chen).

In addition to Carlo’s numerous concert works, Carlo Dean has regularly composed music for film, animation, theatre and dance. His interdisciplinary credits include full orchestra score for The One Second Film, directed by Nirvan Mullick and produced by Spike Jonze, Christina Ricci, Tom Arnold, Selma Blair, Bill Pullman and others (set to premiere in Hollywood in Spring 2006), 43 minute String Quartet and Harp score for a production of Oscar Wilde’s Salome, directed by Rachel Goldberg, violin and harp score for Hun Chung’s animation afterall, and solo viola and solo dancer, commissioned by choreographer Nazorine Ulysse, recorded by Mark Menzies, viola. He has also worked as an arranger with pop/rock groups (most recently Saar Hendelman), specializing in String Quartet.

He recently scored an independent feature-length horror film by filmmaker Jim McMahon called Bloodshed, should be released sometime in 2005, as well as the theme music for the 2005 COLCOA (City of Lights, City of Angels) French film festival.

Carlo has been playing guitar for over 15 years. As a performer (primarily on jazz guitar), Carlo has performed throughout the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. He has been fortunate enough to play with some jazz greats, including legendary trumpeter Clark Terry, and trombonist Al Grey, pianist Skip Wilkins, and bassist Paul Rostock. Currently, Carlo performs in the prolific experimental duo (frequently a trio with Jessica Schaeffer on harp) jerseyturnpike (where he and Dina Carpenito make use of guitar, voice, wine glasses, saw, electronics, and other sounds to make pretty music).

Carlo received his Master’s of Fine Arts in Music Composition (Instrumental) in 2001 from California Institute of the Arts where he was the recipent of the Betty Freeman Foundation Scholarship in Composition. There he studied composition with Stephen Lucky Mosko, James Tenney, and Art Jarvenin, and was a teacher’s assistant in 20th Century Music Theory for Mark Menzies. Previous to CalArts, Carlo received his Bachelor’s of Music in Music Performance from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. While at Moravian College, Carlo studied jazz guitar with Tom Kozic, jazz composition with Skip Wilkins, and Composition with Larry Lipkis.
Carlo recently completed scoring a feature-length horror film, Bloodshed which is due to be released sometime in 2005, and will be shown at this year's Dead by Dawn horror film festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He is also putting the finishing touches on his theme song composition for the 2005 COLCOA (City of Lights, City of Angels) French film festival in Los Angeles.

Carlo scored Nirvan Mullick's The One Second Film (although the score was hundreds of times longer than that) for full orchestra. The film was produced by Christina Ricci, Tom Arnold, Bill Pullman, and others, and is due to premiere sometime in Spring 2006 in Hollywood.

He just returned from a brief West Coast tour supporting jerseyturnpike's new release permafrost, along side electronic bands The Flight Orchestra and Fiction Company. His future projects include a collaboration with Berlin-based electronic composer d_minum (pehr), and the recording and release of two albums, both due out this winter.
